Can the spell checker from Write be used in Outlook Express?

Short answer is No.

The spell checking engine used by Ability Office is third party software and is not compatible with Outlook Express.

We suggest either:

Use Write to compose the email and then use the File/Send/Text option.
Purchase a third party spell checker that is compatible with Outlook Express. ABCSpell is one such solution.
