Support for ODF and OOXML formats

ODF (Sun's OpenDocument format) and OOXML (Microsoft's Open Office XML format - e.g. DOCX and XLSX, used in Microsoft Office 2007) support is something we will look at after the release of version 5. Both these formats share in common XML data inside a zip container.

We estimate support for these formats will take around 6 months. If we can, we'll release it as an update to v5 (ie around Q4 2008). If, after initial investigation, it looks like it will take longer to implement, we'll have to reconsider (e.g. maybe for v6).
