All I can see is the page - the menus have disappeared

You've selected to view the document in "Full Screen" mode. This is not a fault - it's useful if you need to edit your document with as much of the document displayed as possible. The menus are still accessible by clicking on the top-most pixel of the screen (where the menus would normally be). 

To turn off Full Screen mode, press Alt-V and then select Full Screen which toggles this setting on/off.
