General problems opening email attachments

Windows is not very reliable at maintaining a clean temporary location for storing and opening email attachments and as a result of this you may find double-click of your email attachments isn't working the way you would like. Please note that this has nothing to do with the way Ability Office operates.

The following is the most reliable method:

  1. In your email client, save the attachments to My Documents (or use a folder you create specially for this purpose if convenient). The exact method is dependent on what email client you use - usually, right-click will give you the option to save.
  2. Start the Ability application you want to open the file in. If the file is a word processing document (with file extension DOC, RTF, AWW) start Ability Write. If it's a spreadsheet (XLS, AWS), start Ability Spreadsheet. If it's an image (GIF, PNG, BMP, APX, JPG) start Ability Photopaint. Note: if it's a PDF, then Ability will not be able to open it (see Knowledge Base Article 49: Error message on opening a PDF file in Ability).
  3. Select File/Open and open the file.
