Common activation problems

Here are the most common activations problems. In most cases, the information on this page will be enough to help you solve your activation issues.

  1. A typing error on entering the serial number
  2. The serial number does not match the product
  3. Error during connection to the activation server
  4. Cannot get started with activation
  5. Lost / cannot find serial number
  6. Key already used or registration already exists message

1. A typing error on entering the serial number

This is by far the most common problem - with the way the serial number is printed sometimes it's not clear whether a letter is capitalized or the number 1 could be the letter L. If you hit this problem, you will see this error message when you try to enter your serial number in Ability Office:

"The entered serial number does not appear to be correct. Please check it."

Solution: enter the serial number in the validator above - it will try to correct and explain errors.

2. The serial number does not match the product

If you see this error message:

"The entered number is not a valid serial number for Ability Office"

it means the serial number you have purchased or been supplied with does not match the product you have installed. For example, Ability Office was supplied with a PC but you have uninstalled it and installed a different skew from our web site.

Solution: enter the serial number in the validator above - it will tell you what product should be installed.

3. Error during connection to the activation server

If you see the following message:

"Online Activation failed. A connection to the Web Activation Server could not be established"

it usually means the time and date is not set correctly on your PC. The activation process relies on time/date synchronization between your PC and the server.

Solution: double-click on the clock on the bottom right corner of the Windows Taskbar and ensure the settings are correct.

5. Lost / cannot find serial number

If you have previously activated your copy of Ability Office, we probably have a record. Try retrieving it here: Key checker

If you cannot find your serial number and you have not previously activated Ability Office please check the product packaging - in particular, have a look inside the quick start booklet. The serial number is a bank of 6 x 5 alpha-numerics. If you still cannot find it, please submit a suppot query with a note saying where you purchased the product from.

6. Key already used or registration already exists message

Either:

a) The serial number has already been used a number of times and has exceeded usage limit - please contact support using Start/Programs/Ability Office 5/Tools/Online support and we'll take a look.

Or:

b) You are entering the serial number into the Unlock screen. Select the Back button and you should see I have a Serial Number and I want to activate Ability Office. Click Next and enter your serial number at the Enter serial number prompt.
